राष्ट्रीय मुक्त विद्यालय शिक्षण संस्थान की स्थापना मानव संसाधन विकास मंत्रालय, भारत सरकार ने महामहिम राष्ट्रपति महोदय की आज्ञानुसार सम्पूर्ण देश हेतु भारत के राजपत्र (Part I Sec. of No. 42 of the Gazzate Notification of India on 20th Oct., 1990) में प्रकाशित किया गया। NIOS, CBSE- के समकक्ष एक राष्ट्रीय शिक्षा बोर्ड है। भारत सरकार ने शैक्षणिक के साथ-साथ बेरोजगारों को स्वरोजगार प्रदान करने हेतु व्यावसायिक शिक्षा अन्तर्गत परीक्षा, प्रमाण-पत्र, रजिस्ट्रेशन (Vocational education, exam, certificate) हेतु अधिकृत किया गया है। अनेक विषय जिनमें इंजिनियरिंग, कम्प्यूटर, वाणिज्य, कृषि आदि विषयों के साथ-साथ स्वास्थ्य एवं परा चिकित्सा (Engineering, Computer, Agriculture, Commerce, Management, Para Medical, Allied Health Science) के अनेक पाठ्यक्रम संचालन किया जा रहे है, जिन्हें सम्पूर्ण भारत में मान्यता प्राप्त है। NIOS आज विश्व में शैक्षणिक एवं व्यावसायिक शिक्षा के लिये प्रतिष्ठित संस्थानों में से एक है। जो कि भारत में ही नहीं बल्कि विदेशों में भी कोर्सेज संचालित करता है जिन्हें विश्व स्तर पर मान्यता प्राप्त है।

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic Education Programmes (OBE).Government of India through a gazette notification vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it upto pre degree level courses.
